Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy the book and tapes/CDs at a book shop?
Sadly, the book is now out of print, except in Damascus
(see below). We are currently upgrading the illustrations and plan
to offer a print on demand service in due course. This may take
us the whole of 2008 to complete. Please bear with us.
I am going to Syria, can I get the material there?
You can buy the material in Damascus
from the Netherlands
Institute for Academic Studies in Damascus
(NIASD) by emailing director@niasd.org.
When will the other modules of your course be available?
Unfortunately our lives have gotten in the way and
we have been forced to put the other modules on hold indefinitely.
In other words, we have abandoned the original, ambitious plan and
we will not be able to write any more Integrated Arabic
modules. We do, however, encourage other students of Arabic
to adopt our method and structure and create their own modules to
share.
What is the difference between Syrian and Egyptian
Arabic?
Download
this file (Word Doc file)
Why don't you put all the MP3 files together so they
can be downloaded in one hit?
We haven't put all the MP3 files together because
huge files are difficult for some people to download, and we don't
have enough space to upload both individual MP3
files and a combined version. Sorry.
How long will it take to complete the course?
This is really up to each individual student. You
could read the whole book in one day. A normal person who had absolutely
no arabic to start with, could get through the material in about
six months, studying everyday. However, if you really want to feel
comfortable with Arabic (colloquial or otherwise), you will need
two years of full-time, intense study. And then
another few years to refine what you have learnt.
Why don't you publish the material professionally?
When we wrote the material, no publisher
wanted to publish our textbook because it was "too
big for a niche market". So we decided to self publish and
offer the material free to download. Since, we have had several
publishers interested, however, they usually ask for us to shut
down the free website. We do not want to do this as long as the
donations and other revenue cover our costs.
